Let’s Talk Under Eyes
And the importance of keeping them happy!
You might have heard the expression “the eyes are the window to the soul” and while the interpretation make change depending on who you ask, one expression doesn’t: take care of your under eyes.
Dark circles, puffiness, crow’s feet…. These are all concerns that affect the eye areas and while there’s no magical cure that will eliminate them completely, there are a few key preventative and off-setting measures you can start incorporating into your routine today. But first, let’s review what some of these concerns actually are:
Dark Circles
Just like it sounds: visible discoloration under and even around the eye area. Factors like poor diet, genetics and circulation definitely play a large part in just how visible they appear. The skin underneath the eyes is very delicate and much thinner than the rest of the face making it even more susceptible to damage. When you see a dark circle, you’re getting a glimpse into what’s going on underneath because the skin there is more “translucent” - additionally, as we age, the under eyes hollow out a bit more which causes light to reflect differently - in effect, shadows that make darkness appear more prominent.
Puffiness
Similar to dark circles, some of the most common factors associated with puffiness (or “bags”) have to do with diet and lifestyle choices. Things like eating too much salt and even crying can lead to extra water retention in undereye areas while allergies and exposure to free radicals, smoking etc. trigger reactions like swelling. Did you know that not getting enough sleep affects puffiness too? If you’re not catching enough ZZZs it can cause collagen to break down - aka drooping/saggy under eyes.
Crow’s Feet
If you’ve ever seen their “footprints” you’ll get it. These are fine lines, and sometimes even deeper set wrinkles that form under and around the eye area. Like many concerns, aging is the primary culprit since our skin doesn’t snap back as easily as well get older, especially when making facial expressions. For many of us, we’re most expressive in the eye area: smiling, laughing, squinting - when we’re younger those temporarily folds and curvatures go away but that’s not the case when we’re older. Oxidate stress, depleting collagen, and lifestyle choices heavily affect the appearance of Crow’s Feet.
