You’ve probably heard the word inflammation floating around more and more these days when shopping for skincare, especially when used in conjunction with skin barrier support. The question is: what does it really mean? We’re here to break down all the details to help you navigate what it looks like, how to address it, and the easiest ways to get your skin back to its happiest, healthiest-looking state.

What is inflammation?

Inflammation is something that happens to your body when something is trying to attack it (viruses, toxins, bad bacteria etc.). To put it simply, it’s your body’s way of addressing it and trying to get rid of it, resulting in something called an inflammatory response. Your immune system kicks into high gear and sends out cells designed to trap the offenders and begin the “fix-it” process.

What are some common signs of inflammation?

Inflammation can vary from person to person. Some experience it internally in the form of muscle aches/pains and swelling while many most often face the visible signs which directly affect our complexion. Some of the most common signs of inflammation in skin include:

  • Visible redness and sensitivity
  • Skin that feels hot to the touch
  • Dry patches or areas of dehydration
  • Blemishes / Acne
  • More pronounced aging concerns (fine lines, wrinkles etc.)

It’s important to note that these are considered short-term for most. Inflammation can also be chronic and manifest itself in the form of rash-like conditions like psoriasis and eczema.

Is there a way to help remedy skin inflammation through my skincare routine?

There are a few ways to go about dealing with inflammation at home but with chronic concerns, it’s always best to consult with a medical professional to see if a treatment plan would be more beneficial. In the case of topical products (aka our skincare products) however, there are some amazing ingredients to be on the lookout for to help soothe some of the concerns listed above.

Turmeric Root - this Ayurvedic staple has been used for centuries thanks to its natural anti-inflammatory properties. A soothing go-to that brings the complexion back to a calm, brighter-looking state.

Niacinamide – aka vitamin B3 helps a compromised skin barrier which can improve the signs of inflammation like redness and blemishes.

Antioxidants – Antioxidants like Green Tea, Vitamin E and Watermelon Fruit provide an added layer of defense from environmental stressors that cause inflammatory responses.

Fatty Acid-Rich Ingredients – Like Shea Butter and Avocado Oil. These help nourish stressed-out skin and get it back to a place where it can better function without compromise.
