We believe taking care of your skin is essential, and cleansing is the foundation of any good skincare routine! Not only does it help to remove dirt, oil, makeup, and impurities from your skin, but proper cleansing can also provide numerous benefits for your skin's health and appearance. At Karuna, we’re all about sharing everything you need to know about cleansing: why it’s important, all the benefits, and of course, tips and tricks to keep you looking your best!

Why is cleansing important?

1. Cleansing Helps to Maintain a Clear Complexion

When your skin is exposed to dirt, pollution, and makeup, it can become clogged, leading to breakouts and other skin issues. By cleansing your skin, you can remove these impurities, preventing breakouts and keeping your skin clear and healthy.

2. Cleansing Can Help to Reduce the Appearance of Fine Lines and Wrinkles

As we age, our skin produces less collagen, leading to a loss of elasticity and firmness. Cleansing helps to remove dead skin cells and other impurities that can clog pores and make fine lines and wrinkles more noticeable.

3. Cleansing Can Help to Improve Skin Texture

By removing dead skin cells, cleansing helps to promote cell turnover, which can result in smoother, more even-looking skin. On top of that, cleansing can help to unclog pores, allowing skincare products to penetrate deeper and provide better results.

4. Cleansing Helps to Maintain Hydration Levels

When you cleanse your skin, you remove dirt, oil, and other impurities that can clog pores and prevent moisturizers from penetrating the skin. By properly cleansing your skin, moisturizers and hydrating serums can more easily absorb, providing maximum hydration and nourishment to the skin.

5. Cleansing Helps to Maintain Skin Barrier and Balance

Proper cleansing can help to maintain your skin barrier and balance by removing impurities without stripping your skin of its natural oils. By using a gentle cleanser and avoiding over-cleansing, you can maintain your skin's natural oils, promoting a healthy skin barrier and balanced, glowing skin.

How can I ensure I’m cleansing correctly?

1. Understand what cleanser is best for your skin type

Different skin types require different types of cleansers. If you have oily, combo or blemish-prone skin, look for a gentle gel cleanser like Balancing Cleanser that will remove impurities without stripping. If you have dry or sensitive skin, opt for something like Cleansing Oil that’s rich in nourishing ingredients that calm and soothe as they moisturize.

2. Cleanse Twice a Day

It's important to cleanse your skin twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. In the morning, a quick cleanse with water or a gentle cleanser will remove any excess oil and sweat produced while sleeping. In the evening, a double cleanse is great for removing makeup, dirt, and pollution accumulated throughout the day.

3. Use Lukewarm Water

Don’t go too hot! Hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils and cause dryness – throwing your skin way off balance. On the other hand, cold water may not effectively remove dirt and oil, so lukewarm water is the ideal temperature for cleansing at all times.

4. Use Gentle Pressure

Vigorously rubbing or scrubbing your skin can cause irritation, inflammation, and even lead to premature aging concerns like wrinkles and loss of firmness. Use your fingertips to gently massage your cleanser into your skin in circular motions.

5. Rinse Thoroughly & Pat Dry

Make sure to remove all traces of cleanser from your skin, as leftover product can clog your pores and cause breakouts. Similarly to not rubbing or scrubbing too hard during your cleanse, avoid rubbing your skin with the towel, as this can also cause irritation and inflammation. Patting your skin dry will help to retain moisture and keep your skin soft and supple.
